So, despite the mega-bummer-storm of the recent Gary Friedrich super-screwing/Before Watchmen/Avengers movie boycott/Walking Dead profits controversy, I’ve tried to stay positive about the losing battle that is being a comics fan, but a couple things have really stuck in my craw the last few weeks. It really started with this tweet from Brian Michael Bendis:
just fyi- any review of anything that mentions internet reaction or uses the pronoun I more than twice is lazy, amateur crap.
— BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (@BRIANMBENDIS) February 15, 2012Ugh. Super asinine, right? As a person who (sort of) reviews comics and (sort of) knows a lot of people who do it very well, I took umbrage at the fact that Mr. Bendis set such arbitrary boundaries for criticism in order for him to consider it valid.
So of course I shot my mouth off.
The first thing that came to my mind is “what if art teams changed during miniseries on Seven Soldiers of Victory?” It would be jarring. Paraphrasing the Talking Heads, we would say “this is not my beautiful art, well how did I get here?”
I agree with the assessment that there is a focus on who is writing over who is drawing the comic and as a guy who has worked on Socialfist with a few different artists telling the same story, the art can really change the tone and feel. If the style is completely different it takes you out of the moment.
I loved what I read of Daredevil but I can see where if you changed from the starting team to Samnee it would be weird, unless you were telling something completely different. If Daredevil suddenly turned into an all ages adventure book or something I’d be fine with Samnee taking over that would be a different thing. I don’t think Waid suddenly changed the story that drastically (though due to the price I haven’t been able to afford comics).
I think the jarring moment isn’t being stated explicity enough for Wacker and co.
If Sin City suddenly had Jeff Smith art for an arc, it would hurt not because Jeff Smith is bad, but because that isn’t what fits.
end grumpy ramblings/irrelevant reviews (according to Bendis)
